“Any time there has been something like the Air India bombing, even the Walkerton tainted water issue, there has been a need for a public inquiry to show that past mistakes can be corrected,” she says. “There are on-going concerns that (asbestos) has not been banned and it is still being used.”

Cattran says the federal government is still promoting its export – with cabinet ministers still openly promoting the industry while reports have shown people researching the health effects of asbestos mislead decision makers.

Cattran says “the fact that there has been a purposeful misinformation campaign by the industry, by the government, by McGill University and that people were making money from it” demands an inquiry.

The support that we had this past year shows that the community of Sarnia is really behind us,” Cattran said. “And the fact that the government has not been listening to us, we really felt there was a need for another (walk) to draw attention to this issue.” . . . Use of asbestos has been banned in many countries and an Italian court recently handed down prison sentences for a pair of business owners convicted of negligence in 2,200 asbestos-related industrial deaths there.

“That’s so opposite of what’s happening in Canada where we’re still funding the asbestos millionaires, rather than holding them accountable for the deaths they’ve caused,” she said.

Ralph A. Carnovale, LMR Consulting, at 905-257-5241–not a law suit, but a trust fund connected with the David Law Firm in Texas. No fee if no claim is available. If approved, they will take a chunk of the settlement. They will come to where you live if needed. Because it is a trust fund and not a law suit, it may not affect your pension through Workman’s Compensation, but carefully verify this before proceeding.

Bruce Allen, Vice-President, CAW TCA, Local 199–Bruce spoke with Leah at the Vigil. He is interested in helping people get the benefits they deserve:

If you have experience with either of these, feel free to leave a comment or post on our Facebook page.

We would also continue to encourage exposed workers in Lambton County to contact OHCOW for screening and additional information on compensation through WSIB.

October 1, 2011

HELLO!

I am Bruce Bradshaw and I am a procrastinator. On the way to this gathering we stopped at Tim Hortons and over coffee and a muffin I put these words together. Late March of this year I was diagnosed with mesothelioma and told 3 to 9 month was a good guess. My wife, Rosemary, asked “when could Bruce have gotten this messohelova cancer”. (It took weeks to learn to pronounce mesothelioma). The Doctor said 40 to 50 years ago likely.

Well guess what, 40 to 50 years ago I was a utility man (fancy for laborer) at Dow Chemical and was working alongside of Bill Coulbeck. We were cleaning up after some tradesmen, fitters or insulators likely, hence – asbestos insulation.

Bill passed away about 3 ½ years ago with mesothelioma, just over 2 months after being diagnosed. Now I, or we, are really scared. Soon we realized scared and worried will not cure me, so let’s pray for the best, and soon many friends, relatives and neighbours were behind us. Now, 6 months into this journey the Doctors tell us I am in remission. He said it could last a week, a month, or years and I should enjoy each day as a bonus. This is good, but I couldn’t help but think about all those people that did not or will not get a reprieve.

This also makes me think about the people in Canada getting rich by continuing to mine and send this stuff to underdeveloped countries where their workers are now exposed to asbestos and its dangers.

I wish now I could talk to Steven Harper, eye to eye, toe to toe and repeat Rick Mercer’s rant on September 20th. He finished it off with a statement similar to this. – “ Mr. P.M., Canadians are known the world over as a loving, caring and compassionate people. Do you really want criminals and killers added to that.”

Thank you and God bless.
